Sleep is something we talk about regularly at the clinic (and not just in relation to our own!).

Sleep provides an opportunity for the body to repair and recover. Many of the major restorative functions like muscle growth, tissue repair, protein synthesis and growth hormone release, occurs mostly (and in some cases only) during sleep. So it only follows that lack of sufficient sleep will have side effects.

Here are some facts about lack of sleep:

  1. 1. Lack of sleep affects our ability to heal, slowing down injury healing by up to 50%. That means it takes up 4-5 months to heal an injury that would usually heal in 3 months.
  2. Fatigue and tiredness can actually cause back and neck pain.
  3. Athletes are far more likely to get injured if they get less than 8 hours sleep.
  4. It can also have a major negative impact on our mental health, diet, and our ability to cope with pain.

So if you are suffering from lack of sleep or poor quality sleep, it is important to address it.
